"Todas las Novedades del mes" Madrid, Spain
Tuey Connell. June of 2002
The American Tuey Connell was recently in Madrid to present/display his third disc "Songs For Joy and Sadness", in which he demonstrates once again that he is one of the best vocalists and composers of jazz of the moment, compared, by his vocal style, with artists of the stature of Chet Baker, Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole. Under this title, Connell, as it was said to this magazine, has wanted to include sentiments and experiences of the life and of human relations. Really, an ample and general way to feel and to live. When asked about the differences with his previous work ("Is this love"): the third disc is more honest and direct.
Recording for Minor Music this past month of October, with Connell again producing, his friend David Baker, whose meeting years ago was crucial for the race to the top. Baker is responsible for the sound of this disc, with influences of Freddy King and the tradition of Chicago, but also with winks to pop, the blues or folk. Another particularity of Connell is that he composes most of the songs, as much music as poetry, with which he is able to communicate the interior emotions. To write and to sing your own songs conveys his personality and people identify more with you and your music. With respect to the present tendency to privilege the feminine singers of jazz, Connell explains that, according to him the male vocalists of jazz do not interest the industry: the fashion is fort women now. The women enchant me singing jazz, but so also do the men, with feelings and different emotions. After having presented/displayed his music, Connell will return to Spain in October (Madrid and Barcelona) accompanied by his band.
