Tuey Connell
Connell is a singer who belongs in a swanky supper club like Rossi's. Although not quite as resonant as Johnny Hartman, he shares Hartman's instinct for knowing when to linger on a lyric and when to give it a little sway, with a baritone that's intimate but not overtly breathy. He knows how to impart the stories in the great American songbook, from "Too Close for Comfort" to Van Heusen's "I Thought About You" and on to Motown's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)." He's also a pretty fair songwriter in his own right, and, as an added distinction, blends his sparsely jazzy banjo and guitar with his rhythm section. $10. 9:00 p.m. --Britt Robson EVERY M,W FEB 23-25, 2004
