TUEY CONNELL: UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Right from the start this hip guitar and banjo-playing singer covers many a jazz vocalist's domain. He is completely at home there. There are a total of 11 songs, 6 of which are in the standard category. This 2002 session was recorded in Koln, Germany. There is much of Mark Murphy and the late Bobby Troup not only in his style but also in the way he swings a song. His ballad voice on "Charade" (Mancini/Mercer) is unique and soothing to the ear. Just wait until you hear his amazing take on "Too Close For Comfort" (Bock/Weiss/Holofcener). It's dazzling. Scatting "Love Me Or Leave Me" (Donaldson/Kahn) he leaves no note unturned. Tuey is another "Singer's Singer" to be on the lookout for.
