Tuey Connell
Multitalented Tuey Connell is quickly making a name for himself as a superb jazz singer in the same league as such contemporary champs as Harry Connick Jr., Kurt Elling, and Peter Cincotti. His voice glides with sly sultriness, while smoky layers of the blues nicely complicate things as he swings, scats, or works his way through an emotional ballad like the standard "Charade." A triple- or quadruple-threat performer, Connell is also a good writer, contributing three originals on his latest CD, Under the Influence (Minor Music), and an impressive guitarist, preferring the fluid West Coast sound of Wes Montgomery. Since he was a progressive-bluegrass prodigy in the late '80s, Connell's secret weapon is banjo. His seamless integration of banjo into a jazz context on "No Moon at All" is one of the album's high points. Joining Connell will be bassist Neal Miner, drummer Joe Strasser, and rising piano star David Hazeltine. $12. 8:00 p.m.--Rick Mason
